How to Buy a Used Hydraulic Impact Hammer

Hydraulic impact hammers are mechanically simpler than the rigs that carry them, which makes them easier to assess and easier to get wrong. The mistake is rarely the hammer itself — it is buying one whose energy range does not suit the piles being driven, or one whose power pack was sold to someone else.

Match energy to the pile, and to the ground

A hammer is specified by ram weight and maximum energy per blow, and the useful range is narrower than the maximum suggests. Too little energy and the pile refuses short of depth; too much and you risk damaging the pile head, particularly on concrete and timber.

Most modern hydraulic hammers are adjustable across a wide energy band, which is what makes them versatile — but check the bottom of the range as well as the top. A hammer that cannot be turned down far enough is as unsuitable as one that cannot be turned up.

Establish what pile types and sections you drive most, and confirm the driving system: the helmet, the dolly and the inserts have to suit those sections, and they are frequently not included.

The power pack pairing is the real question

A hydraulic hammer is useless without a power pack delivering the right flow and pressure. Hammers and packs are often sold separately, and a mismatched pairing either underdrives the hammer or overheats trying to keep up.

Confirm the flow and pressure the hammer requires at full energy, then confirm what the pack you intend to use actually delivers at working temperature — not its nameplate figure. If the pack is included, establish its hours and service history separately from the hammer’s.

Check the hose set as well. Long hose runs cost pressure, and a set sized for another site layout may not suit yours.

What wears, and what it costs

The ram and cylinder are the heart of the machine. Ask when the hammer was last stripped, what was replaced, and whether the ram has been re-machined. A hammer with a documented recent rebuild is often a better buy than a lower-hour machine with no history.

Seals are consumable and their condition tells you how the hammer has been maintained. Look for oil around the ram and at the hose connections, and treat a freshly steam-cleaned hammer with mild suspicion — it is harder to spot a leak on a clean machine, which is sometimes the point.

Inspect the leader guides or the slide arrangement, the striker plate and the anvil for peening and cracking, and the housing for cracked or repaired welds around the mounting points.

Instrumentation and records

Many hammers carry blow counters and energy monitoring. Where they exist, ask for the data: blow counts against energy settings tell you far more about how the hammer has been used than an hour meter does.

If the hammer has been used on work requiring driving records, the contractor will usually have them. They are worth asking for even informally — they establish what the machine has actually been doing.
