What size compressor do I need for DTH drilling?
Treat the pressure and airflow the hammer manufacturer specifies as a minimum, then allow for losses over the length of hose and the depth of hole. An undersized compressor gives slow penetration and poor hole cleaning.
What is the difference between pressure and free air delivery?
Pressure is the force the air is delivered at; free air delivery is the volume delivered per minute. A hammer needs enough pressure to run and enough volume to clear cuttings, so the two figures have to be read together.
What should I check on a used air compressor?
Ask for service records and check the airend or compression element for wear, since that is the most expensive part to replace. Run it under load if you can, and confirm the delivered pressure and free air output still meet the machine’s rated figures rather than just its nameplate.
