Casing oscillators install and extract temporary steel casing on bored pile and drilled shaft projects. Rather than turning the casing continuously, an oscillator grips it and rotates it back and forth through a limited arc while pushing down, working the casing into the ground as spoil is removed from inside it.

They are used most often where a bore will not stand open on its own — water-bearing gravels, fill and other unstable ground — and on secant and contiguous pile walls where the casing keeps adjacent piles on line. Most units run from a separate hydraulic power pack and work alongside a drilling rig or duty-cycle crane.

Frequently asked questions

What is a casing oscillator used for?

It drives and extracts temporary steel casing during bored pile and drilled shaft construction. The casing supports the bore in unstable or water-bearing ground so the shaft can be excavated and concreted without collapsing.

What is the difference between a casing oscillator and a casing rotator?

An oscillator turns the casing back and forth through a limited arc, while a rotator turns it continuously through full rotations. Rotators generally deliver more torque and can advance casing deeper, but oscillators are simpler and cheaper to run for many jobs.

What should I check when buying a used casing oscillator?

Confirm the casing diameter range it is rated for and the torque it delivers, and satisfy yourself that the clamping cylinders and jaws are sound. Check whether a matching hydraulic power pack is included, as pairing a unit with an unsuitable pack is a common and expensive surprise.
