Foundation drilling rigs bore the shafts for piles, from kelly drilling with augers and buckets through continuous flight auger (CFA) work to displacement and double-head techniques. The rig supplies rotary torque through a kelly bar or drive head, together with the crowd force needed to advance the tool.
Choosing between machines usually comes down to the pile diameter and depth you need to reach, the ground you are working in, and the room available on site. Rotary torque, maximum drilling depth and the type and length of kelly bar are the figures most buyers compare first.
Frequently asked questions
What should I look at first when comparing used drilling rigs?
Start with rotary torque and maximum drilling depth, because together they set the pile diameter and depth the rig can realistically achieve. Then check the kelly bar type and length, the condition of the mast and undercarriage, and the recorded operating hours.
What is the difference between kelly drilling and CFA?
Kelly drilling excavates in stages with an auger or bucket on a telescopic kelly bar, and usually needs casing or support fluid in unstable ground. CFA drills to depth with one continuous auger and pumps concrete through the stem as it is withdrawn, which is faster and quieter but less suited to very deep or large-diameter piles.
Do used drilling rigs come with tooling?
Not always. Augers, buckets, core barrels and kelly bars are frequently sold separately from the rig, so confirm exactly what is included before agreeing a price.
